Two major construction projects will improve the roads and sidewalks of Colleyville, Texas. That’s a great thing for your streets — and a pretty bad thing for Colleyville water quality.

These rehab projects include major shifts in public water supply lines and wastewater infrastructure. As a result, we strongly recommend local homeowners schedule a water quality test during construction to check for heavy metals, increased sediment and inorganic contaminants.

“Don’t get me wrong — local government’s doing a good thing for your community with these improvements,” our master plumber states. “We just want to make sure you have clean drinking water while they do it.”

Tinker Road Construction Alters Colleyville’s Water Lines

Work began on the Tinker Road Water, Wastewater, Drainage, and Roadway Improvement project in mid-February 2025. Construction is expected to last 6-7 months.

This $2+ million project runs along Tinker Road from Emerald Drive to Ponderosa Street. The construction has major impacts on city water lines, wastewater lines, and your storm sewer system.

Water and wastewater line replacement pose cross-contamination risks

Initial documents stated that water and wastewater lines along Tinker Road would be improved. More recently, Colleyville, Texas city representatives noted that sections of these lines would be fully replaced.

Cross-contamination is a major concern during these city plumbing repairs. When water and sewer lines are repaired in close proximity, breaches allow wastewater to leach into drinking water lines.

A 25-year EPA study found that over half of all waterborne disease outbreaks in distribution systems were caused by cross-contamination and backflow.

While Colleyville’s public works department is highly reputable, it’s nearly impossible to guarantee zero cross-contamination during large-scale pipe replacement jobs.

Cheek-Sparger Roadwork Creates Chemical Runoff Issues

The $33.8M Cheek-Sparger rehabilitation project may add chemical runoff to your water supply.

A massive $33.8 million budget is assigned to the upcoming Cheek-Sparger Road rehabilitation project. The budget covers multiple renovation and resurfacing tasks.

The Cheek-Sparger Road project encompasses 5 construction and rehabilitation efforts:

  • Road widening along Cheek-Sparger Road, interlocal across Tarrant County
  • Road resurfacing on Plantation Ct, Plantation Dr and sections of Saddlebrook
  • Addition of sectional concrete curbs and gutters
  • Additional of sectional medians and pocketed turn lanes
  • Additional sidewalk, drainage, stormwater, water and wastewater upgrades

Road resurfacing adds chemical and sediment runoff to drinking water

Resurfacing is necessary to keep our roads drivable and functional. But these projects also create a great deal of runoff that lowers local water quality.

Asphalt particles and dust increase the turbidity of drinking water. High turbidity rates lower the city’s ability to disinfect and treat water properly. Turbid water also allows pathogens and microorganisms to grow.

The EPA states that “higher turbidity levels are often associated with higher levels of disease-causing microorganisms such as viruses, parasites and some bacteria”.

Resurfacing projects can also leach chemicals into groundwater. Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic compounds found in asphalt alongside sulfur and nitrogen.

How Does Local Construction Lower Water Quality?

Local roadwork adds more sediment to your hard water

Roadwork causes soil erosion. When you already live in one of America’s top 10 locations for hard water, that’s a problem.

An NIH study shows that clearing agriculture and soil disruption on work sites increases erosion. This erosion pushes extra sediment into the water supply — and takes asphalt dust and particles with it.

Asphalt and concrete increase stormwater runoff pollution

Roadway surfaces, concrete sidewalks and medians are highly impervious to rain. That’s great news for your car, but not for your water quality.

“The problem with impervious surfaces is that they prevent the natural soaking of rainwater into the ground and slowly seeping into streams,” the Maryland Department of Natural Resources says

“Instead, the rain water accumulates and flows rapidly into storm drains.”

Increased stormwater runoff transports pollutants from our roadways into the public water supply. These include oil, fuel spills, heavy metals, trash and debris.

It’s imperative to test your home’s tap water quality during these major Colleyville infrastructure projects — especially if you don’t have a whole house water filtration system.

Road repairs increase turbidity, driving polluted stormwater and extra sediments into the water supply. Wastewater line replacement along Tinker Road increases the risk of sewage cross-contamination into your drinking water.

Our local expert plumbers offer fast, easy home water quality testing. One appointment, no stress, total peace of mind.
